Resolute

Happy New Year!

Happy 2011!

Happy back-to-school!

Happy now-I-have-to-shed-this-christmas-weight-on-top-of-what-i-was-already-trying-to-lose.

Yes, it's that time of year again.  You take a deep breath and realize that you have re-organize your storage to fit in your Christmas loot, step up your exercise to make up for all the treats and not exercising over the holiday season, and do some fancy accounting to pay for it all.

We tried to keep the gifts giving simple this year.  Well, more like, we had no choice.  Going back to being a one income family means less money for gift buying, party going and well, pretty much everything.   But, we had a most marvelous time just being with family and enjoying the simple things.

There still seemed to be plenty of loot under the tree.  Granted we also had gifts for 10 people under there.

My favorite part is the stockings... all hung in a row...

And of course, the faces of my loved ones as they opened gifts and .... well I don't have a lot of those pictures, as I was quite busy helping Vicki play Santa and drinking as much coffee as humanly possible.  I barely that night.  Call it the anticipation of seeing the kids open their presents... the excitement of seeing if Santa had truly arrived, or the joy of contemplating the gift of Christ some 2000 years ago.

Whatever it was, I was a walking zombie.  But a very content and Christmas-joy-filled mom.

Darin's parents were with us over Christmas.  What a blessing they are!  How many people do you know who truly love and enjoy their in-laws?  I do.

Christmas wrapped up a year of change and growth for our family.  We are thankful for all we have, and all the memories we have created together.

Looking into the year lying ahead of us now, we know it will bring more change and growth.  As I search for a part-time job, as Samm heads to 16 and **gulp** driving, as the big kids continue to work out their plans for school, jobs and how to make it as emerging adults in this tough economy, and the regular every day stuff of life.

I don't make New Year Resolutions.  I don't believe in them.  Can't say I have ever seen anyone keep one.  Instead, I will share the areas in my life where I am putting some focus and have been and will continue to try to grow in.
  1. To take better care of my body and my health.  I don't want to take for granted my good health.  I want to actively contribute to and sustain it.
  2. To be less judgmental, but instead be ready with a kind word, thought, deed and prayer for any and all who need it.
  3. Make sure my husband and children know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are loved and adored by me.  I will give of my heart and my time to them.
  4. More time with God, in His Word and in His Presence.
  5. To make a little time each day to spend on my talents and passions.

May the year ahead bring each you blessings of peace and joy.  May your home be warm, and your cupboards full.  May your family grow closer and experience contentment in each other.  May your heart be filled to capacity.  May your cup runneth over.

Christmas Helper

I had a little helper while making cookies...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

So My in-laws are coming next week to spend Christmas with us. We are all really looking forward to it.

But, for me, it means I have a LOT to accomplish before they arrive. So much baking to do, many errands to run, shopping to finish, wrapping to start, Christmas cards to address, menus to plan.... and on and on.

I do not feel this together right now.

So, on that note.....

I have a very long to do list for today.

And tomorrow.

And...

And...

I feel more like this.

All I want for Christmas is....

I love receiving my kids' Christmas lists.  From detailed and organized from my oldest daughter, to illustrated and spanning over several pages from my youngest (several pages because she writes big and draws everything, not because she is greedy), the lists are always a little slice of my kids' personalities that make me smile.

For example, my oldest, my one and only, handsomest-young-man-you-ever-did-see son can never think of anything he wants to put on a list, so usually I don't get one from him.  But the one year he did give me one, it read a little something like this:
  1. a poster for my room
  2. a cd
  3. a dvd
  4. anything else you might like to get me
He has always had such simple wants.  He asks for nothing.  Even when he should.

See?  Handsomest young man you ever did see.  =)

Anyways, as this year is one of those years where money is an issue and every purchase needs to be considered carefully,
I have a Christmas wish list which I do not expect to be filled.  I would rather we spent that on gifts for the children, and creating memories as a family.

BUT, if I were to make a list.... it may or may not include the following items...

In no particular order:

ya, that's right a cast iron frying pan.  I don't have one.

Cuisinart hand blender - mine is dying.

A belly dance costume.  OOhhhh sparkly!

I think I may have mentioned these before.  =)

any of Ina Garten's cook books - she rocks!

A kitchen torch and creme brulee dishes

Le Crueset Oval 6 quart french oven.....

Greece.

All I really want for Christmas is my family to be healthy, safe and content.
Amen.

Gingerbread House

No I don't make my own gingerbread.  I really do not like working with gingerbread.  So, I admit, I bought a kit.  The house pieces are already made, and it comes with icing mix (horrible!) and candy.  We went shopping and the girls picked out some candies they would like to include.

I started by making a rice krispie snack base.  Which I spread out on some strong cardboard covered with tinfoil.  I then made the gross icing mix and assembled the house.  Once it was set, I made a batch of my own decorators icing and piped on some details.  We allowed that to set and then the girls went to work!

They carefully considered each and every candy they placed on the house.  Vicki had chosen gummy worms for her candy.  She tried endlessly to convince us all that the worms should be all over the house.  We were not convinced.

I particularly like the way they did the roof!

Then once they finished decorating the house itself, they went to working on the "yard".  Now Vicki was very excited because she could now put her gummy worms in the yard.

Because Samm is a girl whose heart is overflowing with love, she had to include a heart.

The path through the yard was my lone contribution to the yard.

I just love the little "pebbles"!

And ....... VOILA!

Two very happy campers and one pretty darn cool gingerbread house!
