Learned Something New About Myself

This weekend I learned that I cannot tolerate and function through the headaches like I used to.

When I was in my twenties, I would bounce back from a migraine quite quickly, usually only losing one day.  I could function through a persistent headache.  Not so much anymore.

Apparently, now that I am in my forties, I have complete emotional breakdowns after four days of persistent throbbing headaches.

Let me tell you how grateful I am for a husband who jumps in to the mess that was my kitchen on Easter morning, to take over making brunch.

Then again stepping in and making dinner.
Without being asked.

He rocks.

Just sayin'.

Wish I could say that I feel better today, but I don't, so I can't.
Here's hoping for a better day tomorrow.

Manic Monday

It's Monday.

Very Monday.

Oh.So.Monday.

My coffee and I were just sitting here thinking about the fact that it is Valentine's Day tomorrow.  (Yes, my coffee thinks, as let's face it, I don't think in the AM hours, so it has to be the coffee!)  While my beloved and I no longer go out of our way to exchange gifts or cards or celebrate, I do try and do something each year to take advantage of the day to bless my family.  Last year, I did this....

Husbands, Marriage and Weddings

Vicki:  When I grow up, I want to have a fancy husband.

Me:  Oh? What makes a husband fancy?

Vicki:  Oh, he is very nice, wears nice clothes, has a big house, will take me places and give me jewels.  Lots. Of. Jewels.

Darin:  "It must suck to be married to me."

Me"Why would you think that?"

Darin:  "Because I have been thinking a lot lately of places that I would like to take you, or things I would like to surprise you with.  But, in reality, we never go anywhere and I never do those things that I think of...."

Me:   "Oh, hmmm.  Ya, you're right!"

I'M KIDDING, I DID NOT SAY THAT HE WAS RIGHT!
What I really said was, "Hmmm.  Those things would be nice, but clearly it doesn't suck to be married to you."

Then we were interrupted by Vicki's hugs and kisses.  =)

From the song my friend Kristi sang at her very recent wedding where she married the love her life:

"I gave you my answer, I'll wear that ring
Yours forever more.
Will you still need me, will you still feed me,
when I'm sixty-four?"

Story of a Girl, Chapter 1

Anyone who knows me personally knows that I was adopted.  For some, being adopted is hard.   It leaves them filled with questions, confusion and a sense of loss.   It wasn't like that for me.  This is my story.

Chapter One - The Girl is Alright

I don't remember finding out that I was adopted.  I just always knew.  As far back as I can remember, my parents told me that someone (my birth mother) loved me enough to give me a better life.  They knew very little about her, but told what little they knew when I asked.   I never had a burning desire to find my birth mother.  I had a mom.  She loved me and I loved her and that was enough.  As a child, I never really gave it a whole lot of thought.

Occasionally, a friend would ask about it.  Once, when I was about 7, a friend came over and we were sitting at the kitchen table coloring and having a snack.  My mom was making dinner.  My friend asked what it was like being adopted.  I shrugged and said that it was fine.  She asked where I was born.  I asked my mom, because I couldn't remember the name of the town or hospital.  Then my friend asked one of those questions.  The ones that can pierce the heart of an adoptive mother.  She asked, "Don't you ever miss your real mother?  Do you wonder where she is?"  Now, I was 7, so I didn't know that this conversation was tearing at my mom, as she kept her back to us and made dinner.  She didn't say a word.

Again, I shrugged it off.  "Not really",  I answered.  "I have a mom."

Later, after my friend went home, my mom asked me how those questions made me feel.  Mom was clearly hurt that I did not correct my friend as describing my birth mother as my real mother.  I knew this was bothering her, because she told me.  I was 7 after all.  Not all that perceptive yet at that age.  My mom cried, and told me I hurt her.  I didn't understand why she was so hurt because of course she is my real mom.  That other lady, the one who gave me up, she was just someone who loved me enough to give me a better life.  I was confused, but I knew that I never again wanted to hurt my mom.

A couple things happened in sixth grade that changed my perspective on being adopted.   Not some life changing, cloud parting, angels singing kind of thing.   Just a couple of events that deepened my feelings and made me feel different.

First, I met someone else who was adopted. We talked about it. He too, was okay with it. He too wasn't driven to find out about his birth mother. He was the first person I talked to about it who said, “Really? You're adopted? Cool! So am I.” For the first time in my life, I didn't feel like there was something wrong with me because I didn't want to know more about her. It's funny, how all the people who questioned me and made me feel bad weren't adopted. They had no idea what it was like, yet they all somehow knew that I should want to find my birth mother. But, now I had a friend who understood. I didn't have to explain to him.

Then she came. She was the teacher who came to take over the job as our sixth grade teacher, as Mr. Shaw had to leave. We all loved Mr. Shaw and therefore automatically, she was the enemy. As I write this I can't even remember her name. One afternoon, as I sat in detention, I asked her for help on an assignment I was working on. Until then, she was still the enemy. It was her fault that Mr. Shaw left. But, as she helped me with my assignment, I noticed that she looked a lot like me. She was short, like me. She had a bumpy nose, like me. Her smile was a lot like mine. She smelled good. I liked her laugh. Then it happened. For the first time ever, I wondered if she could be my birth mother. Or, at the very least, I wondered if my birth mother was a lot like her. I don't remember if I told anyone about this, as I wasn't suddenly wanting to know once and for all. But, I was curious, for the first time.

Fast forward to 11th grade when I was given an assignment to write a persuasive essay on a social issue.  We had a long list of issues and ideas to choose from and we were advised to choose something that would mean something to us.  One immediately jumped out at me.  Adoption.  I decided to write about open adoption.  It fascinated me, as my adoption had been typical of the era.  It was a closed, government handled adoption.  The files were locked.  I knew someone at school who was pregnant and was choosing open adoption.  She wanted to meet and choose the parent herself, then keep in touch through the years to receive pictures and hear how the child was doing. All I could think was that would create a lot emotional stress for her and the parents.   I wasn't sure if I was going to write from a pro or con viewpoint yet. I had to learn more about this.  I starting my research right away.

I gathered magazine and newspaper articles.  I sent away for some brochures from adoption agencies.  They were sent to the school.  I didn't tell my parents.

My mom had a habit of looking over my homework when I left it on my desk, as I rarely showed her what I was working on unless I needed editing.  She was doing just that when she saw all the brochures.   Now, you should know that I wasn't trying to be deceitful, or anything.  I was just avoiding having uncomfortable conversations with my parents, which I knew would inevitably come up if I told them.  Turns out, it was much worse.  Mom kind of freaked out.  But, she didn't want to talk to me from an emotional place, so she had my dad talk to me.   I always hated when he sat me down and started our talk with, "Your mom is very upset because....".  Those were always very long talks.  We had a few of those through the years.

Once Dad explained that Mom had found my brochures and was hurt because she thought I was searching out my birth mother behind their backs, I got my turn to explain.  I told my dad that I was researching open adoption for an essay assignment and that I still have no interest in finding my birth mother. He told me again, as he and Mom had told me many times before, that if I ever feel like I want to find her, that they would like to know, and offer whatever help they can.

I would never take them up on that offer. I would never choose to actively search out my birth mother. However,  I would wonder if I looked like her, if we had the same eyes, nose, smile. But, I would never really want to find her. I mostly just wanted to see a picture.

Red Velvet Cake...

... is what cakey dreams are made of.   Why, oh why, have I never had this before?

Anyways, here are just a couple snapshots from our wonderful Valentine's dinner last night.

The centerpiece.

I have made cards for D and the girls.  I also made them each a list of  "10 Things I Love About You" that I placed on each place setting.  They so enjoyed reading their lists.

Then once we were all served up our dinners, Darin and the girls each took turns making a list of 10 things they love about me.  Yes, I cried.  I was so blessed.

Well, my plate seems to be scraped clean and the laundry calls.  Blast it.

The Big V Day

Happy Valentine's Day.

I don't really think of V Day as a day just for lovers anymore.   I think of it more as a day to just celebrate my loved ones.  All of them.   So, today I celebrate my husband, my children, our parents and siblings and their families, our extended family, our friends and you.  Some of you may fall into more than one these categories.  Woo, double celebration!

Through the years, I have had some very memorable Valentine's Days.  Most included a whole lot of money being spent.   One year, Darin treated me to a night out on the town, with a romantic dinner at a beautiful restaurant, taking in some bands and dancing at several night spots, finished off with a stay in wonderfully luxurious hotel, champagne and strawberries.    Seriously, it's hard to top that.  He set the bar so high.

Most years included spoiling the kids with cards, candy and some kind of momento, a nice dinner and lots of treats.

One year, Lexi helped me turn my dining room into a romantic little bistro setting and I made a four course romantic dinner for Darin and I.   I think I may have a picture...

That was one of the best memories.  I believe that after dinner, we put on some music and danced in our living room.

Thank goodness Lexi was there to help provide some creative decor ideas.  We used items I already had.  And overall, it was an inexpensive, but lovely, romantic and memorable evening.

This year, ummm, today, we can't afford to go out for dinner, or buy a bunch of candies, stuffies, or jewelry, etc.

So I am going to bless my family and celebrate how much I love them by doing some of the things I do best.  I am cooking a lovely meal consisting of rosemary roasted potatoes, some kind of chicken dish to be determined yet, cheesy cauliflower (a family favorite) and salad, followed by a sinfully rich and delicious red velvet cake at a beautifully set table with candles, sparkling cider (my girls LOVE to drink bubbly drinks from stemware!) , and love notes strewn about.   It's simple.   It's LOVE-ly.   I can't wait.

What are your plans?

In Honor of Love

Love is on people's minds this time of year, so in honor of this most complex emotion, I give you...
(drum roll please)

Love Quotes

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

- Mother Teresa

" Love is patient and kind, Love is not jealous, conceited, proud or boastful, it is not arrogant, selfish, irritable or rude. Love does not keep a record of wrongs. Love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth, Love never gives up, and its faith, hope and patience never fail. Love is eternal.''

- 1-corinthians 13: 4

"If you would be loved, love and be lovable."

- Benjamin Franklin

"To love a person is to learn the song that is in their heart, and to sing it to them when they have forgotten."

- Anonymous

"At last you kissed me, I could die in waves again, and one good lick of quicksand took..."

- Heather McHugh

"The decision to kiss for the first time is the most crucial in any love story.   It changes the relationship of two people much more strongly than even the final surrender; because this kiss already has within it that surrender."

- Emil Ludwig

"Dance like no one's watching,
love like you'll never be hurt,
sing like no one's listening,
live like it's heaven on earth"

- William Purky

Kindness in words creates confidence, Kindness in thinking creates profoundness, Kindness in giving creates love.

- Lao Tse

There is a time for risky love. There is a time for extravagant gestures. There is a time to pour out your affections on one you love. And when the time comes --seize it, don't miss it.
-Max Lucado

Resolute

Happy New Year!

Happy 2011!

Happy back-to-school!

Happy now-I-have-to-shed-this-christmas-weight-on-top-of-what-i-was-already-trying-to-lose.

Yes, it's that time of year again.  You take a deep breath and realize that you have re-organize your storage to fit in your Christmas loot, step up your exercise to make up for all the treats and not exercising over the holiday season, and do some fancy accounting to pay for it all.

We tried to keep the gifts giving simple this year.  Well, more like, we had no choice.  Going back to being a one income family means less money for gift buying, party going and well, pretty much everything.   But, we had a most marvelous time just being with family and enjoying the simple things.

There still seemed to be plenty of loot under the tree.  Granted we also had gifts for 10 people under there.

My favorite part is the stockings... all hung in a row...

And of course, the faces of my loved ones as they opened gifts and .... well I don't have a lot of those pictures, as I was quite busy helping Vicki play Santa and drinking as much coffee as humanly possible.  I barely that night.  Call it the anticipation of seeing the kids open their presents... the excitement of seeing if Santa had truly arrived, or the joy of contemplating the gift of Christ some 2000 years ago.

Whatever it was, I was a walking zombie.  But a very content and Christmas-joy-filled mom.

Darin's parents were with us over Christmas.  What a blessing they are!  How many people do you know who truly love and enjoy their in-laws?  I do.

Christmas wrapped up a year of change and growth for our family.  We are thankful for all we have, and all the memories we have created together.

Looking into the year lying ahead of us now, we know it will bring more change and growth.  As I search for a part-time job, as Samm heads to 16 and **gulp** driving, as the big kids continue to work out their plans for school, jobs and how to make it as emerging adults in this tough economy, and the regular every day stuff of life.

I don't make New Year Resolutions.  I don't believe in them.  Can't say I have ever seen anyone keep one.  Instead, I will share the areas in my life where I am putting some focus and have been and will continue to try to grow in.
  1. To take better care of my body and my health.  I don't want to take for granted my good health.  I want to actively contribute to and sustain it.
  2. To be less judgmental, but instead be ready with a kind word, thought, deed and prayer for any and all who need it.
  3. Make sure my husband and children know beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are loved and adored by me.  I will give of my heart and my time to them.
  4. More time with God, in His Word and in His Presence.
  5. To make a little time each day to spend on my talents and passions.

May the year ahead bring each you blessings of peace and joy.  May your home be warm, and your cupboards full.  May your family grow closer and experience contentment in each other.  May your heart be filled to capacity.  May your cup runneth over.

Tuesday Time Travel

I wanted to do a thoughtful post in honor of the pending Thanksgiving celebration.  But, my brain is mush this morning.  *yawn*

So here is a nugget from my old blog, Legacy, originally posted 11-20-06, called, Counting My Blessings

With soooo much to be thankful for, I will just take a couple posts to list some of the things that come to mind, in no particular order.

Grace: sufficient to save a wretch like me.

Love: My husband. You rock baby!! You reminded me what it is like to feel, to love and to live again. You are still and always will be my favorite person to spend time with.
and my kids: J-man, Lex, Sam-sam and the V. Loving you all is a gift of immense blessing!

Friendship: Sharley, Kristi, Charity, Mandy, Liz, Jen-jen - you all are the glue that holds me together. Too many others to list. I wouldnt be who I am today if not for the friends who come in and out of my life, day to day, week to week, month to month, and year to year.

Family: In-laws, out-laws, near, far, young and old... wouldn't want to be stuck in this world without you all.

Church: To worship. To commune. To serve. To love. Not to be contrainst by walls or labels.

Laughter: a day without it, is a sad day indeed.

Creation: the reflection of God in it all inspires and calms me.

Life: each and every day is a gift. To see God's hand in my every day existence leaves me in awe.

A Slow Kiss

"Life is short. Break the rules, forgive quickly, kiss slowly, love truly, laugh uncontrollably and never regret anything that made U smile."

I saw this on twitter this morning.

It amuses me that the one thing that stuck out on that quote was "kiss slowly".   It really made me miss my husband. Can't wait until he gets home from work today.

Sorry if I grossed you out.  You know, with the kissing first thing in the morning.  =)
